Brauner Foundation and New York Law School Help Nine Spend Summer, 2001, Working and Learning In Washington, D.C.

The Brauner Foundation and New York Law School continued their partnership efforts last summer by sending nine law school students to Washington, DC, for unique internship experiences.

The students were selected because of their outstanding academic work and their interest in pursuing the area of telecommunications law as careers. Seven of them worked at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), one at the Alliance for Public Technology (APT), and one at the Telecommunications Research Action Center (TRAC).

The seven interns at the FCC were Carla Davis, Rachel Davis, Laura Tils, Reema Sheikh, Heather Ellis, Jisha Vachachira, and Jan-el Martinez; the other two interns were Sapna Zaidi, who worked at the APT, and Tanessa Cabe, who worked at the TRAC.

According to Laura Tils, who attends New York Law School, "The experience of working at the Federal Communications Commission was a turning point during my enrollment in law school, in that it gave me a sense of direction with my career.

"I can now say with certainty that I am highly interested in telecommunications and media law and plan to apply not only to the FCC upon graduation, but also to apply to a more narrow range of firms which will give me the experience I require to excel in my field."

"If one is interested in telecom/media/broadcast law, the F.C.C. and Washington, DC are THE places to be because they are where one has exposure to the opinions and arguments of interested parties all across the nation."

"You not only have exposure to their arguments, but you get to experience first hand how the Commission considers those arguments as well as policy in making their decisions. It's a multidimensional exposure to ideas. Plus, there is an excellent atmosphere of mutual respect among colleagues."

"I had a wonderful experience at the FCC and I want to thank the Brauner Foundation for helping me to work there!"
